OT: Flight questions - lazydays - 11-13-2012 My 20th anniversary is coming up and I am planning a trip to Kauai to celebrate. Normally I travel as cheaply as possible but I thought I might splurge a bit on this trip. I've found the options to be a bit perplexing though and I'm hoping someone here can shed some light as google has failed me in this case. I would be flying from Seattle to Lihue via Alaska Air next March and I'm seeing normal tickets for about $1100 and first class for $1600 each. This seems like very high pricing. Here are my questions: 1) Is it possible to buy a ticket at these high prices and get a refund if the price decreases before the flight? 2) What is Full Flex? The website doesn't really seem to give much in the way of details. 3) What is preferred seating? Re: OT: Flight questions - Lemon Drop - 11-13-2012 Yikes!! That's about double what I paid for coach the last time I went to Kauai from Seattle, which was in 2008. You should be getting that flight for around $600 or less round trip. I just looked at Alaska's site and found seats in that range for March. Why waste money on first class? Spend it on the experience of being in Hawaii instead. You won't get there any faster in 1st class and it's only what 5 hours - coach is fine. Full flex on Alaska means you can get a refund or change the ticket at no fee, it's usually the most expensive ticket after 1st class. For me it's never been worth it to pay for full flex, you can pay a fee to change lower priced tickets if you need to. As for preferred seating, that just means that certain seats, aisle and window, are reserved near the front of coach. Again, you can choose from other good seats when you book the ticket. Have fun planning and congrats in advance on the 20th! Re: OT: Flight questions - IronMac - 11-13-2012 I agree with flying coach for "only" 5 hours. Take it from a guy who flies across the Pacific in coach. Re: OT: Flight questions - lazydays - 11-13-2012 Ok, I'm cool with coach. Saving $500 each allows for a lot of fun in Kauai. I am curious how you found tickets for $600 Lemon. I think the first rule of posting vacation information on line is not to publish specific dates so I'll just say the second half of march. Actually, after my grandmother being broken into during her brothers funeral I think maybe I should consider a house sitter while I am gone. I wonder how one goes about finding one. I'll have to think on that. Re: OT: Flight questions - thermarest - 11-13-2012 Might be searching too far ahead of the actual travel. I just clicked through a bunch of dates this month and next month and found a fare as low as $311 on that route, and bunches of fares in the upper 300s and lower 400s. MHO, google has the best interface for flight searches these days www.google.com/flights Re: OT: Flight questions - Black - 11-13-2012 Congrats on your 20th anniversary! (what is it the anniversary of?) Re: OT: Flight questions - lazydays - 11-13-2012 Well Black, my wife might say 20 years of putting up with me. I'd say 20 years of being in love with a very special person. We dated for five years before getting married and we knew each other three years before we dated. So we've been together forever. I could never give her what she deserves but I can plan a nice vacation for her. She doesn't know it but I'm planning a ceremony to renew our vows and give her a new ring. The one she is wearing now is from our college days (when we got married) and is very modest. Re: OT: Flight questions - DP - 11-13-2012 lazydays wrote: Ain't you romantic! Your wife might enjoy it, especially if she's never flown First Class before. Re: OT: Flight questions - pipiens - 11-13-2012 You can split the difference and get 3 coach seats together. That will give you room to spare. Bring some good carry on food. It will be better than 1st class junk. |
