Price drop: Canon SX50 $329 - Mike Johnson - 11-16-2013 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009B0MZ1M/ Re: Price drop: Canon SX50 $329 - space-time - 11-16-2013 tempting. we have too many cameras already K-01 Q with Prime. Q with Zoom *istD Canon ELPH HS 300 iPhone 5 (2x) then some older cameras for kids Canon A70 (almost dead, good for the 4 year old) Canon A 630 (for the 8 year old) But none come close to the zoom on the SX50 (or 40) decisions decisions... probably pass for now Re: Price drop: Canon SX50 $329 - The UnDoug - 11-16-2013 So what I want.....as silly as it may be....is a camera which makes it easy to get that out of focus background with an in focus subject. Focal length, right? On all the point and shoots I've had, that either isn't possible, or isn't as easy as I'd like it to be. Can the SX 40/50 do this easily? Re: Price drop: Canon SX50 $329 - freeradical - 11-16-2013 The UnDoug wrote: No The bigger your sensor, the easier this will be. Focal length and distance to the subject really have nothing to do with depth of field. What matters is the reproduction ratio, which is the size of your subject on your sensor with respect to how big your subject is in real life. So, with a 35mm film camera or a full frame DSLR, you can have someone who is 6 feet tall in real life be one inch tall on your sensor. This is a 1:72 ratio. On a 645 medium format film camera, you can make that 6 foot tall person two inches high on film for a 1:36 ratio. So, F4 on a 645 camera has about the same depth of field as F2 on a 35mm camera. The tiny sensor of a point and shoot digital camera makes it tough to have restricted depth of field since the reproduction ratio might be as high as 1:1000. Just monkeying around with them on Aperture priority I can blur out the background on the Elph more than on the SX50, shooting a flower in a vase on a table with a painting on the wall 3 feet behind. Could you please share your settings and shooting mode for shooting those or photos like that with the SX40? I can't seem to get results like that with mine. TIA! The first one had these settings: ![]() and then the second ![]() I'm thinking I was shooting in full Auto but that was almost a year ago. I know they were handheld. Re: Price drop: Canon SX50 $329 - JoeM - 11-18-2013 Nice, thanks. I'm somewhat amazed you shot those in Auto. I have tried in AV but haven't been totally been happy with the effect. Looks like I have more practicing to do. |
