That'd go over real well in California right now… LOL

Except that it needs to be far enough ahead of the tunnel entrance, so that oversize trucks can be diverted. As it stands now, an oversized truck will be stopped right at the tunnel's entrance and, will completely block the lane. Other traffic will back up behind the truck and, it will be a clusterfuck getting the resulting traffic jam cleared.

Even with all that as a potential problem, I suspect clearing out a truck stopped before it is jammed under the overpass is many times quicker. Trucks actually jammed into such a location can take hours to be cleared out.

And often the structure has to be examined to see if integrity has been compromised.

A while back, a tractor's trailer hit an overpass and knocked a lot of concrete off onto the highway. Two lanes were closed backing up traffic for miles and hours, after the tractor/trailer was long gone.

My question is- what triggers these STOP signs? Is a laser or some sensor detecting that the trailer is too tall for that tunnel?

And the sign *is* trés cool.

But it would freak me out if I had never seen it before.
