don't need USB3, just plain old 2 or even 1 will do. cheap is key, though.

can even do a SDHC card

How cheap is cheap?

Ive seen 32 GBs for $10, 64s for $20 on sale.

Going rate is only a few bucks more

quick search at DM
Newegg offers the PNY 64GB Turbo USB 3.0 Flash Drive, model no. P-FD64GTBOP-GE, for $29.99. Coupon code "EMCAPKX76" cuts it to $19.99. With free shipping, that's tied with our mention from last month as the lowest total price we could find by $4. It features an integrated cap cover.

I got a 128 GB USB 3 locally for $40, but it was rebate so tax was on $60 plus gas to drive there. They should be backwards compatible.

I think $20 is good. they are going to be used in a car stereo and may be nicked or misplaced.

$22 - PNY 64 GB USB 2.0

Edit: They also have a 128 GB USB 3.0 for $40.

Edit 2: I don't remember seeing 256 GB thumb drives being $80, but the 256 GB SSD's have been $88. If you don't really prize the small form factor, you can get what might be faster and cheaper by putting a SSD in a good 2.5" USB 3.0 case.

If you have a Micro Center by you, they have store branded 64GB USB 2.0 for $17.99, USB 3.0 for $21.99.

For the difference in price, I'd go USB 3.0, if for nothing else but future proofing and reuseability.

thanks, Cary. I do have a MC nearby.

A friend said he got a 64G USB3 thumb drive at Costco for about $25.

That seems awfully cheap. Does anybody remember that price or is he misremembering?

I was at Costco this morning, but forgot to check.

(I did get the Eneloop battery/charger pack, though!)
