Vienna hotel recommendation please? - space-time - 05-06-2015
Vienna Austria. I need a good, reasonably priced hotel for 2 adults and 2 kids. No need for fancy stuff which we will probably not use (pool, spa, gym). I just want to have a clean, safe, nice place to crash at night after roaming the city and shower in the morning. Must have private bathroom. Within walking distance to main tourist attraction would be nice, but we could also take a bus/tram/trolly/subway/whatever they have there if the ride is not more than 15-20 minute.

We stayed here, when we were in Vienna a few years ago. It had the best breakfast buffet you could imagine, and it was included in the room rate. It was conveniently located also.

We were very happy with the Pension Schönbrunn.
It's not within the Ring, so it's a 10-minute U-Bahn ride to the center city (Karlsplatz), but we had a rental car (because we were doing Berlin-Vienna-Prague) so street parking was useful to us. It's a Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) building on a quiet side street about a block from Castle Schönbrunn, one of the city's main tourist attractions. We found several charming taverns with excellent food in the neighborhood as well as local fast-food like Wienerwald chicken. There's a Courtyard by Marriott two doors down on the same street (we were booked there the first night, but moved). The owner spoke excellent English and served a very nice breakfast, and I made a note at the time to recommend it highly.

If you can, check out the guest house in Vienna's first Benedictine monastery. It's in the first district and seems to fit your needs perfectly. I grabbed the first link I could find, from trip advisor. I've stayed there in the past and it was wonderful.

Le Meridien across from the Opera is my favorite. Also stayed at the Marriott, Hilton, Intercontinental, and one Austrian 3-star hotel. The last one is something I would definitely not recommend, and in general you do not want to stay in any 3-star properties in Europe if you can avoid it. Vienna has a lot of wonderful coffee places with nice breakfast options and I would not insist on eating it in the hotel.
Air conditioning is a must and some hotels still do not have it, although the situation is much better than it was 10 years ago (Sacher got upgraded, I think Grand did, too).
I know some people prefer properties with local feel, but in my vast experience I found that potential frustration is not worth it. I want to see the city, not explore the interior of the hotel, and want to know what to expect and be able to relax in comfort when I come back to my room. That mainly means chains, or at least 4-star hotels in Europe. Novotel may be cheaper than those I mentioned above. Another mistake I made in the past: keep in mind that Trip Advisor and similar reviews are within the price range, and a highly reviewed cheap hotel is still a cheap hotel.

If you don't at least make an affort to see the Vienna Philharmonic, one of the top 5 orchestras on the planet (arguably as good as Chicago Symphony) I will disown you.
