I saw one that looked like a good deal, but noticed it was perpendicular. Does that matter?

Indifferent. Look at the iMac. Pretty much everything is mounted vertically/perpendicularly.

it refers to the orientation of the bits on the drive.
they're a bit faster than regular drives. worth it.

Higher data density, great drives.
Instead of the bits being like this _ they are like this I, and more per square inch.

I don't know that they've been out long enough to know if there are as reliable as "regular" drives, but there's no reason to think they would be any different in that regard.

I am not so sure about that. I remember reading about them a year or so ago and apparently they are much more sensitive to heat. I don't really remember the physics behind it but apparently high heat can demagnitize the bits.

The hard drive reviews show that they are roughly 20-30 % faster and offer more storage.
THey have been out since February or so.
I have 2 of these and will let you know on reliability.
The ones I have , come with a 5 year warranty.

They work fine in a Mac but they have to be mounted sideways.
