MacBook on fire! - space-time - 05-12-2008

No, just kidding, but the fans in my wife's iBook are always ON. Even when unplugged and set to "Better Energy Savings". The screen dims, but the fans keep running at full speed. She does very light browsing (no streaming, just reading forums and slideshows).

I am going to call AppleCare sometime this week, but is there anything else I should try first?

It's the previous generation model (we got it in March or Feb? after the latest model was introduced). I upgraded the RAM to 4 GB, and that's it. Running 10.5.2, and I believe there fi a firmware update out, but I haven't installed that yet.

I noticed some sleep issues since day one, but I haven
t paid attention to the fans that much until a few days ago when I noticed the problems. It I put it to sleep manually the fans will stop, but if left alone, it never goes to sleep by itself, and the fans just blow air until the battery is dead.

Have you check Activity Monitor to see if something is consuming a lot of CPU time. Sometimes flash or video ads in web pages can suck up a huge amount of CPU time.

BTW: Is this a MacBook or an iBook, you've called it both.

Re: MacBook on fire! - space-time - 05-12-2008

Sorry, it is a MacBook. She had an iBook before, also white, so sometimes I use "iBook" but I really mean MacBook.

I still like iBook name better though, I find it ieasier to pronounce. And PowerBook sounds so much better than MacBook Pro!!!

yes, it's a MacBook.

Re: MacBook on fire! - space-time - 05-12-2008

thanks, I'll reset the SMC !

Re: MacBook on fire! - Black Landlord - 05-12-2008

Run that firmware update as well, but it's a wierd one-- make sure you read the instructions thoroughly.
For future reference your 'book is known as a "late 2007".

BL,

which one do you have?

Re: MacBook on fire! - Black Landlord - 05-12-2008

Same. 2.2, late '07, 4 GB RAM max. I've heard the fans briefly once, twice at the most, I think during an OS install.
