I need recommendations for a bottle/jar opener - AlphaDog - 05-14-2008 The old hands just can't get the tops off of some bottles, and using the nutcracker only works about half the time. I need an opener that will work on the larger screw top caps on, for example, bottles of juice. I was looking at the selection on Amazon and see two that might work, but if anybody has used either, I'd appreciate feedback. This is the first one, which seems to do more than I really need: http://www.amazon.com/Progressive-GT-2950-International-Multi-Opener/dp/B0008D7GO2/ref=pd_sim_sg_title_2 The second one: http://www.amazon.com/Pedrini-Black-Satin-Jar-Opener/dp/B0000959FX/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1210708432&sr=8-4 I'm leaning toward the second one, but I the handles don't seem to be cushioned or non slip. If anybody knows of another one they like, I'd like to hear about that, too. Thank you! Re: I need recommendations for a bottle/jar opener - vicrock - 05-14-2008 I like the flat rubber disks - in most cases they give enough traction to open subborn jars and bottles. Re: I need recommendations for a bottle/jar opener - rgG - 05-14-2008 I have one that is similar to this. Mine is made a little differently, but it works on the same principle. It is great for big things like pickle jars because my hands are too small to get a good grip. http://www.jaropener.com/?gclid=CLLp_vCZppMCFQ3_sgod6iO0oQ Re: I need recommendations for a bottle/jar opener - Gutenberg - 05-14-2008 I have a friend with arthritis who swears by the Black & Decker Automatic Jar Opener. http://about.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=1366505/search=jar%20opener&mode=about_arthritis& Re: I need recommendations for a bottle/jar opener - GeneL - 05-14-2008 [quote Gutenberg]I have a friend with arthritis who swears by the Black & Decker Automatic Jar Opener. http://about.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=1366505/search=jar%20opener&mode=about_arthritis& My S/O has arthritis in her hands and was always asking me to open jars for her, so I bought one of these Black & Decker Automatic Jar Openers years ago when they first came out. It's been a great help to her. It's easy to use and has worked perfectly with only one or two exceptions over the years. Definitely worth the money. ![]() GeneL Re: I need recommendations for a bottle/jar opener - AlphaDog - 05-14-2008 Keep the suggestions coming! I do need something portable, though, so an electric opener would have limited value. I already have a rubber gripper and a nice gadget for opening jars with larger lids, so what I need is something that gives me more leverage when opening the smaller ones. I don't know how to describe this very well, but the combination of gripping and then having to apply strength to open small items is hard, because of damage in my hands and wrists. Re: I need recommendations for a bottle/jar opener - freeradical - 05-14-2008 I run the tops of bottles under some hot water. The metal expands and this makes bottles easy to open. That's one of my favorite tricks for larger jars (aided occasionally with a whack on the countertop!) These juice bottles have that plastic ring that has to be broken before the lid can be removed, and it's the gripping and applying enough pressure to break that seal that gives me the trouble.
