Help! Did Brother driver just kill my MDD? - prymsnap - 12-28-2008 OMG, what's going on?? I was having problems printing from my MDD (10.4.11) to my Brother MFC7420. So I deleted several duplicate MFC7420 printers in the Printer Utility, then downloaded the latest driver from Brother, then installed it. The final step of the install is a restart. Which I did. Now the MDD sounds like it's spinning, but the monitor is black. Several forced restarts (via the MDD power button) did not solve the problem, even with the shift key pressed. I forced open the DVD drive with a paper clip and inserted Disk Warrior, restarted via the power button and held down "C" hoping that Disk Warrior would work. Again, a completely black monitor. Any suggestions? I'm trying not to panic. Thanks. Re: Help! Did Brother driver just kill my MDD? - Black Landlord - 12-28-2008 PMU reset. Look on your motherboard for a button labeled "PMU". Hold it for about 10 seconds. Re: Help! Did Brother driver just kill my MDD? - prymsnap - 12-28-2008 Okay, I'll try to dig up a pix of the mobo. Thanks for the info - hope it works. Re: Help! I'm now trying this strategy: "I found this on a Mac site. Sometimes computers lose their mind. Don't ask me why or how it happens but it does. Sometimes you simply have to totally discharge the computer. One thing I have learned about the Blue and white and the Gray G4 Macs is that sometimes pushing the PMU is not enough. If your machine is dead, then try the following. * Unplug the unit. * Remove the battery * Push the PMU switch (count to 5 slow) * Push the start button on the front of the Mac (count to 5 slow) * Let the unit sit for 15-30 minutes * Replace the battery * Plug it back in, and push the start button" I'll report back in a few. Re: Help! Did Brother driver just kill my MDD? - prymsnap - 12-28-2008 Update: after removing and replacing the battery as suggested above, the MDD does start...but only if the Brother 7420 is not attached. So should I delete all the Brother software (altho I suspect it's scattered all over the place) and reinstall? Re: Help! Did Brother driver just kill my MDD? - Panopticon - 12-28-2008 Yes, completely remove any Brother printers. Clear out the printer prefs & fix permissions too. Hopefully, it is something simple but I doubt the driver was the cause. Re: Help! Did Brother driver just kill my MDD? - gabester - 12-28-2008 Have you tried power cycling the printer? I've found on occasion that a Mac will refuse to boot when there's some issue with a connected USB device. On at least one of those occasions there had been a power outage and the USB device did cleanly power up afterwards; cycling its power allowed the Mac to reboot properly as well. g= |
