OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - wurm - 03-23-2006 So here's a situation just begging for opinions. We sort of inherited a loaded 2005 Subaru Outback wagon when my mother-in-law passed away last October. It's a beautiful vehicle and drives very nicely. But here's the problem. At 6'2", I'm far from a giant, but I can't get comfortable in the damn thing. The power driver's seat lets me adjust it any number of ways, but it can still go only so far back. So yesterday my wife asked if I wanted to consider selling it or trading it in towards something else. My first thought was that I don't even want to bother, but as I think about it, I guess it wouldn't hurt to see what else is out there that might be a better fit. One problem is, I don't want to have a car payment. So, don't be suggesting a Mercedes or Acura. And being in MA and subject to our wacky winters, I like having the AWD, but I'm not locked into that. My wife has a Mazda Tribute which she loves. It's the only vehicle I've ever driven where I actually have to move the seat forward to feel comfortable driving. However, I don't like the way it drives. I'm comfortable in my MPV minivan, but maybe that's partially because of the upright seating. I know style is a very personal thing, and one man's fugly is another's sharp. And I'd still like to find something with decent gas mileage. I kind of like the Hyundai Santa Fe, but that thought is greeted by my wife with "You don't want a Hyundai." And since it was her mom's car... I figure when I bring the Outback in for its next service, I'll check out the Forester to see if it has any more room. I'm also going to ask if the dealer can install some kind of seat rail extender, which could be an simple solution. But that may be impossible because of the fact that it's a power seat. Anyway, I realize that leaves about a thousand possibilities, but feel free to let fly with some suggestions. Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - Jimmypoo - 03-23-2006 Trade it in on a MacBook Pro. Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - spearmint - 03-23-2006 Subaru has a new bigger SUV but luxury and maybe the Forester has more room. Subaru is a great car and will give you best trade in. I live vicariously through car buying advice because I can't. Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - Ken Sp. - 03-23-2006 I think some Outbacks had adjustable pedals and steering column. The dealer "should" know. Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - Jimmypoo - 03-23-2006 You tell your wife I resent that Hyundai remark. I've even got a scoop on mine. Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - threeprong - 03-23-2006 I'm 6'3 and just sold my 1997 SUbaru Outback with manual seats. I only scooted it about 80-90% back so it sounds like the power seat may have less adjustment room. You should have oodles of headroom in that car, i know I did. Maybe you can swap power for manual seat? I'd go sit in one with manual seats just to see. PS. i hate giving car advice. 3p Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - chopperbob - 03-23-2006 How about the Honda Element? Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - cbelt3 - 03-23-2006 Stick with the outback, fix the seat. You'll be happier in the end, and be out less $$. Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - spearmint - 03-23-2006 Here is the Forester, sure likes a lot more room than the Outback. ![]() Re: OT: Everyone here seems to love giving car-buying advice. - tenders - 03-23-2006 I agree the best idea is to invest in a fix for the Outback seat but what about a PT Cruiser? Strong preference for turbo. Really, check it out. |
