Recommendations for a quick website? - volcs0 - 06-11-2009

My sister is starting a business, and she plans to launch an e-commerce site in about a year. She will hire this out.

In the meantime, I'm trying to help her as much as I can, as I have just enough web experience. I've put up a placeholder site with some basic info, contact info, etc. As a next step, she wants a place for people to join a mailing list, download information, enter a contest, etc. - very simple maneuvers. I've done all of this stuff in the past with PHP/SQL. But for ease-of-setup / consistency / expandability, I'm wondering if I should use one of the oneclick installers that Dreamhost has available. Should I use Wordpress? I've built sites using Joomla, but it is way too complex for what she needs right now. And like I said, in a 6-12 months, she will roll out a new site - this is a temporary fix for the next few months. Traffic will be low - a few dozen hits per day, if we're lucky.

Thanks for your recommendations.

Take a look at Squarespace.
Very easy to use, e-commerce. Good, adaptable templates, good reviews. Leo Laporte moved his stuff there from WordPress, and raves about it.

There lowest business plan is about $14 a month but there are 10 percent off coupons everywhere and I have seen some better, but cannot remember where.

You're a coding kind of guy, so I suggest Coda:

freescotland has a good idea. I would use either SquareSpace or Wordpress with a number of plug-ins.

and what do ya'll think of Drupal?

Drupal isn't quick. At all. For a beginner's site who has to maintain it , that is much too complex. For a more involved site that will grow, it's definite possibility. Why do you ask?

Wordpress. I have been looking at Squarespace but so far I don't see many advantages over the very fast, free, and extensible WP.

trisho, it's because the wife has drafted me to learn it. She's the fancy designer, I get to have all the fun.

Ohhh...Godspeed, you brave man. But, seriously, from what I understand, using themes with Drupal as well is the best way to go.

I went with Joomla. Dreamhost had a one-click install (no Drupal), and I've used Joomla in the past. One thing I noticed right away, is that Joomla does not support multiple user groups...that's a problem.
