FWIW, I think that prize was a misguided effort to award this country for electing our first person of color, presented to Obama as the leader of this country. In short, a mistake in thinking that we had overcome a major hurdle in our attitudes about race. Probably due to not understanding a number of things about the USA, not the least of which is we don't really consider the President the leader of this country unless we agree with him. I honestly don't think it was meant to be A Major Award for Obama the man, but rather Obama the symbol. Too confusing for anyone in this country to grasp.

Nothing in the announcement about the USA. It was all about international relations. I grasp what they were doing, but they were waaaaaay premature.

Norwegian Nobel Committee wrote:

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

Oslo, October 9, 2009

It is indeed very hard to summarize that statement as anything other than "awarded for not being George W Bush."

Regardless of their palaver, I maintain that they gave the prize to an imaginary person that they dreamed up in their naivete. They decided to award it, then wrote up some boilerplate after the decision to justify it. I wish they hadn't done it.

So the rest of the world is ready to go play golf while journalists are being beheaded?

What a lame ass, ignorant comment from the far right.

You are too shallow swamp.

Once again you prove how biased you are.
Even the NYT is bashing Obama for the optics his golf obsession projects.

Oh for crying out loud, is the right wing still harping about Obama playing golf? They think he should be caddying instead, yes?

you may be overinterpreting....it may just be that the righties were low on chuckles and eager for the opportunity to have a fun execution of a US citizen to joke about.

swampy, just because reactionary media is running the golf meme doesn't mean regular folks give it much credence. It shows the desperation of the far right.

Yeah, we're desperate for a leader.

The impression I got from Obama"s Foley "eulogy" was..."Sorry to hear about your kid, Mrs Foley. Now I gotta go, 'cause I have a one o'clock tee time."

They do remind me of flies, buzzing around American corpses feasting on the tragedies of others.

Re: RIP , photojournalist James Foley - $tevie - 08-23-2014

If You’re Upset About Obama’s Golf Game, Here’s Reagan Goofing Off During Major Events

A particularly intolerable meme continues to play out in the news media and online: apparently U.S. history began on January 20, 2009 when Barack Obama was inaugurated. In case you were unaware, President Obama is evidently the first president to take vacations; he’s the first president to play golf; he’s the first president to be photographed without a suit or tie; and he’s the first president to routinely use a teleprompter. If you believe any of that, then you’re a moron who needs to crack a good book — anything prior to the events of 2009 will do. There you’ll find that not only are Obama’s vacations and so forth in line with most previous presidents, but in terms of overall time off, he’s taken the fewest vacation days of any modern president other than Bill Clinton.
...
So, in the interest of history and the obvious inability of Republican concern-trolls to actually do the research themselves, I decided to set the way-back machine to the beloved Ronald Reagan presidency. Here’s a series of harrowing events from the 1980s, along with the comparatively AWESOME optics from Reagan, the now-sainted chief executive. The photographs are all from the specified dates.

From an e-mail I received...
I'm on it. Still at work. I'll hit it when I get home. Btw the American
journalist killed by Isis was My dear friend. I've had an awful 2 weeks.

Not sure what Foley's Chicago connection was, but I've come across more than one acquaintance that knew him. Makes it hard to appreciate the humor of the situation.

Re: RIP , photojournalist James Foley - swampy - 08-23-2014

Reagan's ranch was his HOME. Same for GWB's ranch. When Obama goes on vacation, he doesn't go HOME. He goes to ritzy upscale rented million dollar mansions (on the tax payer's dime). I don't begrudge any of them time at Camp David which most folks consider "the Presidential retreat".

I don't really care if Obama plays golf. Heck, I love golf. I played to a 2 handicap through high school and college. Even thought about turning pro, but the finances wouldn't allow it. I would just rather not hear about it after a tragedy. And from the few videos I've seen of his swing, he probably can't break 80.

How many times do the committee members have to apologize for being legless drunk the day they voted ?
