many of the "free" font sites have excellent fonts -- even in postscript -- for example:

I was thinking the same thing about "who cares what your peers think?" But I disagree on if your client likes it you should go with it. You have to think about the audience. I've found many people - beyond pro designers - know comic sans is system font that cheap/inexperienced designers like to overuse. I've seen people look at nice work that has CS on it and say "it looks cheap." And when I finally drill down to find out what they don't like, it's the font. They didn't know why they didn't like it.
For kids, I use kidprint. For casual, Especial Kay work ok. I have a bunch of other casual ones too.
Sometimes I use a more formal font but make the design more casual. Then you get the look, but the readability.

Well, if I can't find that perfect substitute, I'll have to go with Comic Sans and just remember to keep the piece out of the portfolio and off my site. The hatred of Comic Sans, while not universal among other designers, is white-hot in its fury when you do run into it.

The ONLY places where Comic Sans is the appropriate choice of font:
1. A sign that says "I'm retarded"
2. The "kewt" mispellings on a "Kuntry Bumpkin" type "rez-trant men-yoo"
3. The phone number "BR-549"
It's use in other works displayed to the public is banned by international treaty ...
... in my mind.
