Please, let's not slam doctors for... um... wanting to DO THEIR JOB. If you want to play doctor and take meds on your own, go ahead. You can sue yourself after you screw up and end up in the hospital. But if you want me to do what I was trained to do, shut up and pay me. Unless you like designing web sites for free, or whatever you do. If I spent my day writing scrips for people who wanted to diagnose themselfs and self-prescribe, I wouldn't have any time to see people with good judgement who want to come in.

I'm sorry that you are offended that medicine is a business. That's the US, if you don't like it, go to China and get some communist medical care.

But that's just my 2 cents.

Medicine IS a business.. and I applaud those that choose to practice it.

But unfortunately, in some ways, the medical profession treats all it's customers like complete morons.
If we followed the same "recommendations" for mechanics as is often given for seeing a doctor, no one would ever vacuum their car, or put their own gas or winshield washer fluid in their cars.

I don't WANT to bother my doctor with every damn bump, scrape, and sniffle...
I DO want to visit my doctor and get his valuable expert opinion and advice about this funny mole that changes color and shape on my arm (kidding, don't have one.. but it's an example of something a doctor SHOULD be consulted about)... or those shooting pains in my chest... (also, don't have 'em...).

I've lived with allergies and sinus problems my entire life... most doctors I've talked to have never even experienced severe allergies.
That does NOT mean I "know more about them" than my doctor... but I damn well know MY bodies reactions to them and can give a pretty expert opinion on whether my symptoms are my "routine" allergy symptoms or something "unusual".

Re: Zmax Anti-Biotic - jardster - 05-08-2006

A routine allergy symptom, easily treated with something either over the counter, or something that he has prescribed before, and would not be harmful to just have "as needed." Many of my patients have as needed meds available to them.

Something "unusual," you need to see them. Why some meds are prescription and others OTC is a debate unto itself, but in the meantime, if you want me to use my DEA number, you should come see me (I say this as I fill out prescription refill forms during lunch!).

My sinuses never felt better than the week I spent on Oahu, Hawaii. As soon as I started breathing my home air, they went right back to their normal, closed ways.

So, I think we should all move to Hawaii, based on my powers of observation!

There's a reason for that.

Think about it.

While I'm normally not a fan of the finger-pointing shame-on-you type of responses, in this case there is a good point to be made, perhaps macaroo is already aware of it: Antibiotics can work wonders when you really need them, but they are not aspirin, and should not be taken at the drop of a hat.

Doctors often are prescribing them L & R, sometimes to the long-term detriment of the patients own immune system; sometimes to the detriment of the antibiotic's own effectiveness. I personally feel they should usually be avoided except as a last resort, if you want to stay healthy. Better to try to avoid the infection from the start if possible, as cbelt3 suggests w/saline spray.

That said, earlier this year I got a stubborn infection in a finger through a tiny little cut, and it just wouldn't go away. I did everything short of voodoo before finally giving in and getting the professional's Rx. It took a 10-day course of oral antibiotic, then 10 days of a strong topical antibiotic, then a 2nd 15-day course of the oral AB, to finally knock it out. I'd not like to repeat that again for many years, but when you need it, you need it.

I am just finishing a course of antibiotics for a sinus infection. My allergist prescribed Augmentin, mentioned Zithromax and amoxycillin as being unlikely to knock it out.

macaroo-
dunno if you've tried this course of action.
lower doses of guaifenesen for a couple months to completely dry out all the mucous membranes, even the ones a nasal wash can't reach.

Worked for me although my sinus blockages were never blamed or complicated by allergies.

I beleive Pseudophed is not an antihistamine. It's an indirect alpha agonist, which means that it constricts blood vessels by causing the release of neurotransmitters from the presynaptic ganglion.

Paul,

You are exhibiting common sense. Please refrain from the use of common sense in medical care.

I've always found it strange that people would visit physicians for the most basic and common of symtopms...however, occassionally, I've found people who had something life threatening/disabling diagnosed early as a result of getting a relatively benign sounding constellation of symptoms "checked out". The trouble with medicine is that the more you know, the more you rely upon it.
