Rather than 'cutting corners' and reducing costs, privatization of public services usually costs more and/or does not provide the services required by statute. Uhm.... the justification for privatization is always about money, not just 'political reasons' like sticking it to the unions. As far as services provided, etc. that is usually caused by bad contractual terms and conditions. Which then implies that governments are dumb and corporations are smart. To which I'm not going to completely disagree. I've seen bad examples of privatization. I can understand. Re: Walker Wants to Privatize Food Stamp Distribution in Wisconsin - Mac1337 - 05-02-2011 I once met at an obviously out of towner at the grocery store. He wanted to buy some beer and wine. There are three beer distributors here that are pretty well known to the locals but good luck trying to send an stranger to them. They are often located in some back alley warehouse. He then said if they carried such and such wines. I told him I am sorry but for that you have to visit a state wine store which is located at....I must admit that being used to the system here, I am always taken aback when I see liquor sold at convenience stores. The days of people hanging off the back of the truck may be over too. They are using trucks with a gripper to pick up trash cans. I am not sure how quickly they could have implemented this if township employees were involved. OK - I'll guess that you are trying to redirect an entire thread about privatization of services based solely on your own experience of buying beer ? Am I close ? Back to the original post - having lived through (and also paid for) Gov Daniels debacles of privatization, including outsourcing of social security benefits, leasing of public roads, etc... they have cost me more. This from a lauded "fiscal conservative" and former Bush(jr) budget director. It was all about political connections and paying off cronies and has cost our state billions .... again BILLIONS at the expense of schools and other needed services. Sorry about your beer trouble though. Re: Walker Wants to Privatize Food Stamp Distribution in Wisconsin - Mac1337 - 05-02-2011 If you at least acknowledge that sates being in beer business is dumb, you might have a more sympathetic audience for whatever else you are arguing. But no, the mantra must be kept. Re: Walker Wants to Privatize Food Stamp Distribution in Wisconsin - RgrF - 05-02-2011 States are only in the "beer" business at the behest of beer distillers and distributors. Getting a law passed that restricts distribution of beverages only enhances profits for distributors. Do a bit of research if you think otherwise. Re: Walker Wants to Privatize Food Stamp Distribution in Wisconsin - lafinfil - 05-02-2011 I can't do anything about the dumbness of your state, except acknowledge it. : -/ Re: Walker Wants to Privatize Food Stamp Distribution in Wisconsin - $tevie - 05-02-2011 Virginia is a weird state to choose as an example of nirvana for alcohol policy, considering that anything with an ABV of 14% or above has to be sold in state-owned stores, and that many counties in Virginia are dry. |
