My money is on assuming he was there by tracking for months the people coming and going, especially family members.
Actually, from the analysis i've read it seems that we weren't certain that Osama bin Laden was actually there until we found and killed him. This uncertainty was part of what delayed the operation, but for some reason or another President Obama decided that the evidence was sufficient to send in the Seals. I suspect that he was (understandably) concerned that OBL might have been surrounded by women and children, and a bloodbath could be a terrible outcome. It seems only one woman was killed (and several more injured) in this raid.

The fact that the woman was killed says the rules of engagement was to shoot all human shields. Interesting precedence.

A "compound" is a fortified multiple-dweller house or a fortified series of housing units connected together.
Those pictures show a "compound" and other compounds nearby.

A "compound" can also simply be a cluster of buildings surrounded by a wall or fence, the fortified part isn't a prerequisite. For example, the Kennedy Compound in Hyannis Port or the Bush Compound in Kennebunkport, both of which have security of course but I wouldn't define them as being fortified.
It occurs to me that perhaps this is Dakota's problem: he thinks a "compound" has to be a mansion of some sort.

I don't care how many cinder block huts you string together. It is still no "compound". You are the stupid one who can see the car barely squeezed in there and still call it a compound. Besides, what do you care so much if it is a compound or not? Do you have the naming rights? Now, this is a compound.

If you scroll up a bit, you'll see that YOU are the one who is making a fuss about whether or not it's a compound.
