I wonder if that partition will do hardware test as well.

I've been wondering where that came from -- I thought it was an error, especially since my MacBook
keeps renaming whatever OS I have on that partition "EFI Boot" -- always has, no matter what the
drive is named.

There was a function on the first 4+ versions that was like Exposé - you could minimize various windows
and select what you were working on or a different one.

That function appears to have disappeared (and the app) -- with the 494 update.

btw... don't use any Snow Leopard DISK WARRIOR issues on the drive -- it makes it useless.

I had to do a nuke and pave last night after using DiskWarrior on it - even though DiskUtility said it was OK.

The drive did its double boot thing (spin cycle, then flash of gray screen, then another short spin cycle, then
back to the gray screen)..... and it stayed there.

Granted - it might have been doing something -- but after 4 minutes and two boot attempts, I said "DIE!"

I zero'd the partition, reinstalled 480. Then I downloaded the update. NOTE - you can save the updates
by not installing them right away. You'll find a NEW folder called "Updates" - and they sit right there
for picking - in case you don't want to download them again.

This time, after the double boot, the screen went to the blue linen - and then populated with the new
desktop - which looks like a shot of Andromeda. That desktop started with 480.

They just need to make the time machine backup include the boot partition.

Been a proponent of this for a while, and still surprised they've never added it. Being able to boot from an emergency partition on your Time Machine seems like it should already be happening. (I know we can do it on our own via partitioning, but it seems like it should be part of Time Machine's functionality.)

Having the hidden boot partition right there makes for a more reliable chance it actually boots from it. External Time Machines/drives or even Time Capsules would be possible but all are more prone to not "just work." Maybe we'll get that with 10.8 in limited form.

Didn't someone here just get their iMac's hard drive replaced? Found it! Bill came to $460, $389.06 for the drive alone. Great service.

Somebody's not in the loop:

Apple today released a PDF documenting how large business and educational customers with many Macs will upgrade to Lion via the Mac App Store. It appears that even for those customers, Apple will not be offering Lion via physical media. Like the consumer release, OS X Lion will be available via online delivery only.

There won't be any reason necessary, other than convenience, for Apple to provide DVDs. Anyone who feels they need one will be able to make their own disk or flash drive. And most people won't need even that.

For every person whose HD fails, I'd wager there are a bunch more that can't even find their original OS disk.

What if I want to bypass password protection which I can now do by booting from the DVD?
