documenting won't make it pass or fail the GPU test.

I'm pretty sure this machine was not able to boot up when I sent it in. They ran the replacement without a hitch, but I added a lot of documentation when we sent it in.

Don't know the two are connected, but it can't hurt!
The test runs in firmware at a low level and doesn't require much as far as the computer working. The machine need not boot for it to run, nor do you need to see anything on the display. It boots from a USB drive, and writes a log file with a pass or fail.

interestingly enough, i'm about to replace a mobo on one of these units this week - but i couldn't get the special test to run on it.

and it froze during the Apple Hardware Test.

good thing it's under AppleCare and didn't require the GPU test results.

I was lucky with mine, well past warranty coverage, Apple Genius couldn't get the test to run, basically said "The machine is in great shape, I'll put this down as an NVIDIA issue."

Fixed, no charge.

:agree:
ggd/speedy-

and right you both are!

i finally remembered about doing a "safe boot".

it took almost five minutes for the macbook pro to get past the blue screen but it finally did.

hoo-ray.

then i repaired permissions, did a software update, did another repair permission, when to re-boot and voila, life is again glorious in macbook pro land.

no blue screen of death.

no bad graphics card.

no apple genius to convince.

thanks to all who responded. i very much appreciate knowing that when there is a mac related headache there is a community to share your concerns with.

ymmv

be well
