Extremely poor taste is more like it. When someone is terminally ill it takes a huge amount of insensitivity to proclaim "he's gone" even if they are arguably only referring to his professional life.

I gave up on MacLife some time ago. I had a problem with a phrase in an article that could have been described as in "extremely poor taste". Wrote them about it and never heard back. It was not something I thought should have been ignored. It was bad enough in my view that they should have written a very strong apology.

How do you know that they knew at that time that SJ was dying?

How do you know that they knew at that time that SJ was dying?
While none here are in a position to know, it's very hard to imagine Tim Cook and others in that inner circle were not aware of Steve's grave situation.

Cook likely knew enough about Steve's condition since at least August, when tapped for the top slot. Had to have been at least a brief face to face meeting. We know, "thanks" to TMZ or whatever the web site, what Steve looked like then.

I have no idea when any of the Apple senior staff were told of Steve's death. Maybe they knew prior to the Apple Event, maybe not.
Certainly some of them knew of his condition for a time, days weeks, months, I don't know.
But I don't think Tim Cook is the of the same presentation cloth as Jobs. Look at the various Jobs interviews and see how quick he is, especially with a light joke now and then. I just don't think that's Tim.
As for the MacLife article, we don't know that they had any actual knowledge that Steve was terminally ill. They, like people here, could have guessed at any number of scenarios.
I see it as an unfortunate coincidence, not prescient, not in poor taste. Now if somebody has footage of the staff meeting showing otherwise, I'd concede.

With my mom's cancer, and I imagine any kind of death from illness, you do know when you are talking hours rather than days. I would think that Jobs' inner circle knew his passing was imminent.
