Re: Blister Remedies - graylocks - 03-15-2012 gee, will i be able to get 3G coverage in the Grand Canyon. i mean, suppose something happens and i need the forum for help?:wiggle: Re: Blister Remedies - vitus - 03-15-2012 Best blister remedy is prevention. You need well-fitting, broken-in boots. Remember that after several hours on the trail you feet will swell, especially in warm weather. I use ultra-thin poly sock liners inside of thick wool hiking socks. Second line of defense is on-trail recognition that you are developing a "hot spot" and taking action before a blister develops. This means paying close attention to how your feet are feeling. When you detect a hot spot, stop now and apply moleskin in "donut" around the hot spot, not on top of it. That only serves to increase pressure on an already stressed location. If you already have developed a blister on the trail, proceed with the moleskin as above, and best of luck. Don't pop it, but it likely will pop by itself anyway. Re: Blister Remedies - hal - 03-15-2012 Go into REI and talk to them. There are all kinds of recent developments. I think your boots are fine as long as they fit. Silk sock liners under wool socks is tried and true. Moleskin = useless. You need to reduce the friction in that area. There are spays and some other stuff that will adhere to the skin and take the brunt of the friction. The worst thing you can do is to put on moleskin before you start out. It WILL come off and make things MUCH worse... Re: Blister Remedies - mattkime - 03-15-2012 blisters will happen on the trail. moleskin and bandaids will help but you're much better off trying to prevent blisters. if they occur, you'll likely be walking through whatever pain and raw skin you have. its a bit painful and gross but i've seen people go hundreds of miles like this. when it comes down to it, blisters are more likely to be an annoyance than a problem. the best way to prevent the problem is to wear the shoes before the trip. better yet, wear the shoes with a loaded pack. go for a couple day hikes. a heavy pack changes the way your body carries weight which can change the pressure points inside your shoes. i'm unfamiliar with the trail but if there's a lot of elevation change then you might find a tall building where you can climb stairs. up AND down. the more you prepare the more you'll enjoy the trip. Re: Blister Remedies - graylocks - 03-15-2012 okay, i'm going to go with shoes i have but i just ordered silk sock liners and wool socks for my son and me from REI. (threw in a small first aid kit to get free shipping.) also ran out to wally world and got something for my present blister and some moleskin as back up. in a week or so when this blister has heeled and the socks arrive, i'll do the hiking boots on the treadmill again and see how everything feels. thanks! my son doesn't have hiking boots but i've heard/read this is a real touristy trail that one can do in athletic shoes so he should be fine. i want to wear my Vasque hiking boots for the ankle support they provide. Re: Blister Remedies - mrbigstuff - 03-15-2012 Cabela's also has the silk sock liners, which is where I got a good price. Not ultimate quality, but not bad. Made in China, but I think all silk products are MiC. Re: Blister Remedies - testcase - 03-15-2012 Double wall / layer socks. The inner layer hugs your foot and the outer layer hugs the boot. Any friction is between the layers of fabric. Re: Blister Remedies - mattkime - 03-15-2012 bah, put the boots back on while the blisters heal. you're just making the process take longer. |
