Re: RANT: 'MBPR' is false advertising. This is a 'MBAR' - M A V I C - 01-14-2013 Haven't MacBook pros not had an audio line in for quite some time? Even my 2007 requires an imic. This is a 'MBAR' - decay - 01-14-2013 Apple started calling consumer-level Macbooks "Pro" when they EOL'd the Macbook line. Re: RANT: 'MBPR' is false advertising. I have to use an iMic. For example, I've got a plantronics headset with two jacks - line out and line in - and the line in doesn't work (it's for the mic.) That said, the headset port does use the mic on my other headphones which uses one jack for headphones and mic. Re: RANT: 'MBPR' is false advertising. This is a 'MBAR' - Buck - 01-14-2013 Sekker, the things you mention are minor. As a MBPR owner I can say I absolutely love it. Magnificent screen, Super fast, Great battery life, Doesn't get hot, Light weight, etc. 1. Audio input - non issue. 2. Ethernet port - I agree; it would be nice, but the bottom case would have to be thicker. I have the adapter. 3. Firewire - non issue, I have the adapter. 4. Glossy - Matte - I think this display is perfect. 5. Upgradeability - I bought it with 16GB of RAM because of that. If it's a big deal for you get the old unibody model. 6. Magsafe - I agree the magnet could be stronger, but I'm already used to this one - no problem. 7. No IR remote - who cares 8. No external battery charge indicator - who cares I did take an extra day deciding between the regular model and the Retina, and made the right choice for me. What would I change? Add one more Thunderbolt and one or two more USB3. Also, make Apple RAM and SSDs cheaper. Re: RANT: 'MBPR' is false advertising. This is a 'MBAR' - sekker - 01-14-2013 Buck, the point I'm trying to make is simple - Apple likes to compare itself to cars. The 'Pro' designation was supposed to be a BMW-class computer. One aspect of BmWs is not that the engine makes the car go faster, it's all the 'little' things like easy ports that worked well for adding an iPod in a 2001 model (one that predates the iPod revolution). This is not a BMW. It's a very expensive Honda with a supercool windshield. Still nice (I own two Hondas myself) but they are not in the same league as my uncle's BMW. In the past, Apple has added back missing pieces. A good example was removing the FW800 port going to intel Macs, then adding them back in the second generation, I doubt FW is coming back. But a third TB port would fix that. I suspect things like the battery indicator could get added back, I personally miss that capability. I use my MBPR a lot unplugged. Re: RANT: 'MBPR' is false advertising. This is a 'MBAR' - M A V I C - 01-14-2013 FWIW, the MPB's have rarely had "pro" hardware for quite some time. They would need much beefier video cards to qualify as "pro", IMHO. As far as the rest of the issues, I agree, that's why I would never buy one. Regarding Buck's breakdown... 1. Audio input - Big issue, but not really that much worse than the current lineup. 2. Ethernet port - I really don't want to be forced to transfer large files over wireless and would gladly give up a few mm. 3. Firewire - it's going away, I understand that. I don't have many FW devices anymore. 4. Glossy - Matte - Matte is for pros, all the way. 5. Upgradeability - Yep. Considering there's machines out there with over 1TB of RAM, 16GB is nothing. Maybe every year they'll increase capacity and expect people to buy an entirely new machine. I'd never buy a machine I can't upgrade the RAM on - at least not for "pro" usage. 6. Magsafe - Hey, I still think the parallel adapters suck compared to the perpendicular ones. 7. No IR remote - I use this sometimes, and coming soon, probably more often. 8. No external battery charge indicator - I use this all the time. When it's been sitting for a few days (eg if I go on a trip), it's good to see if I need to top if off before I go somewhere without power. Re: RANT: 'MBPR' is false advertising. This is a 'MBAR' - sekker - 01-14-2013 Ok, one more deficit - no Kenington lock slot. To add security to this ultraportable, the best current solution we can find is to add a case with a lock slot. I will say that with solid state storage, I think 16GB is going to be pretty good for the life expectancy of this machine. As for audio in, the 13" MBP has the same single I/O audio port. The 15" MBP has separate audio in and out ports. Re: RANT: 'MBPR' is false advertising. This is a 'MBAR' - Gareth - 01-14-2013 M A V I C wrote: Wow! Where do I find one of these machines with over 1TB of RAM! The Mac Pro tops out at 64GB. Upgradeable RAM is nice and all, if you don't have the foresight to max it out in the beginning, but honestly, there are no guarantees the regular MBP will support more than 16GB anyway. When and if denser chips become available, maybe it will, but maybe it won't either... A minijack audio input seems like more of a convenience than a "Pro" feature. If I was doing any "Pro" work with audio, I'd probably want a more professional audio input anyway. Just some thoughts. I'll probably never buy a Retina simply because I mostly use an external monitor anyway, so it'd be a waste. I'd really like to see a quad-core 13" something though. This is a 'MBAR' - M A V I C - 01-14-2013 Here's one place you can get a machine with 1TB of RAM http://www.pogolinux.com/products/intel_servers With upgradeable RAM options, you can buy what you need now, then upgrade later when you need more - as opposed to buying a whole new machine. |
