can you boot from an external and run the ram test, just to see if it completes?

It could be your RAM slots given the issues with the ejectors. Make sure the RAM is well seated. But I doubt if it is the actual modules. Good luck, I hope it's not the logic board.

I've successfully run the test in multi user mode (just a regular boot, using Terminal to launch the memtest)

I've never tried booting from an external disk in single user mode.

When the Mac boots to the verbose screen, accepting commands, but not fully booted yet -- is it booting from any specific HD yet?
