i've had a multifocal acuvue prescription for years and would still need reading glasses for my iphone. they were also not optimal for computer use and generally i would take them off as soon as i got home.
this spring a new optometrist wrote a multifocal prescription that corrected for a slight astigmatism and used acuvue oasys lenses. wow! what a difference! i can read the iphone and other small print and often forget to take them off when i get home they are so comfortable.

Nearsighted people lose the ability to read close with single-vision (and later, multi-vison) lenses when presbyopia kicks their tail.
That's the ability of the lens in your eye to focus. Nearsighted people can just lift or remove their glasses (barring bad astigmatism) and read.
If presbyopia isn't too bad, strong light will may let you read with single vision correction as your pupil will stop down and give you a little range.
Some progressive lenses have worked for me, some have not. I gave up contacts years ago as they couldn't correct my astigmatism.
Lasik did.

LASIK -- well now you're talking a whole nother sitiation as it were. A cataract "fixed" one of my dad's eyes by necessitating his lens or whatever getting shaved. He still wears glasses because of the other eye.
Multi-focal anything scares my wallet but next week I'll "look into it" so to speak.

Rightfully so.
Not every vendor can do it well, and not everybody can wear them well, so to speak.
My first pair of progressive lenses were fantastic, and I can't remember where I got them. My next few pair were problematic with the various "zones" not being wear they needed to be.
I'm due for a lens change as I go longer than my cellphone contacts before noticing that it's time to upgrade. I may try Costco, if they cut for my existing frames.

I have one mf and one astigmatic.
$360 for the year.
The progressive are a different story.
Just glad I have union co-pay. Yeow!

maybe i'm calling what i have incorrectly. what i believe my optometrists have called multi-focal in contact lenses is having separate prescriptions for each eye. my right eye is 6 while the left is 4.5. combined it enables me to read average text sizes or see far off. the exam and prescription cost the same as any contact lenses exam or lenses. i get my eye work done at costco, btw.
my glasses, which i would still say i wear most of the time, are progressives.

multi-focal in contact lenses is having separate prescriptions for each eye.
While I've never heard that term (which is apropos of nothing) it's probably more common than not to have two different eye prescriptions. And the brain is pretty handy at making sense of what both eyes see.
And though I've never hear "multi-focal" in reference to progressive lenses, that makes more sense to me than differing prescriptions for each eye. Again, apropos of nothing.
In Lasik (apropos of nothing in particular) stereo vision and mono vision are used to refer to the end result of surgery- either the eyes have the same vision, or one has near vision and one has distance vision. This allows for reading with one eye, and normal distance vision with the other. Add a pair of glasses and you have distance vision with both eyes.
The biggest advancement in contacts at the time I finally gave them up was toric lenses. Hydrophilic had already been around for a while. Torics never worked for me, and I doubt progressive, bifocal, or trifocal contacts would, at the time.
I'd never go back to contacts now as the maintenance is so off-putting. A Lasik update might be a consideration but it's a little pricey.
Maybe if I can find a coupon.
