Re: Tom Clancy RIP at 66 - RAMd®d - 10-02-2013 I have a lot of *his* books, all hard cover, and a few paperback duplicates for travel. The franchising of Clancy disappointed me. I learned to steer clear of it. Some of his stuff fell a little flat for me, but when connected, it was out of the park. His passing is sad, especially at only 66. Re: Tom Clancy RIP at 66 - anonymouse1 - 10-02-2013 Sad to hear of the passing. Still, he became a parody of himself, especially, IMHO, with Rainbow 6. And the bit about how the Israelis were going to allow the Vatican Guard to protect Jerusalem???? Too bad, his good stuff was very enjoyable. Re: Tom Clancy RIP at 66 - freeradical - 10-02-2013 He told the world 27 years ago that aircraft carriers are nothing but missile magnets. We still haven't listened despite the fact that anti-ship missiles have improved vastly since he wrote Red Storm Rising... Re: Tom Clancy RIP at 66 - chopper - 10-02-2013 Man, 66 for a writer is waaaaay too early a check out. I didn't care for his books but liked his diligent no-nonsense attitude about the writing life. 76 would have been too early. Re: Tom Clancy RIP at 66 - Ombligo - 10-02-2013 Like others I lost interest after Rainbow Six but even that was a good read (I just didn't care about the characters). My favorite work is he least known of the big editions - Red Storm Rising. Clancy came along just as my alltime favorite went sour - Fredrich Forsyth. I have my NPI edition of Hunt. I did hold a small grudge when he jumped ship as soon as he hit it with his first book. He could have made NPI a ton of money and publicity. 66 is too young for anyone. We knew that in WWII, before missiles (as we know them today) really existed. Red Storm Rising is a GREAT book for a primer on "what WWIII could have looked like". I've read most of his Jack Ryan books up until the first with Jack Jr. At least now maybe I'll be able to get caught up. I never did get into any of the other series that he wrote or co-wrote. I specifically remember thinking about Debt of Honor on 9/11. 66 is way too young. No cause of death has been mentioned, but I would assume cardiac arrest - he looked like a meat and potatoes kinda guy. The Hunt for Red October is still one of my favorite books and my favorite movie. In fact, I posted something about it yesterday on his FB page. R.I.P. Of course, he may not have stayed quit... And yes, too young! |
