My mechanic tells me that the mileage is the actual age of the car...

My DD has 104k on it when I bought it, but it was in better shape than most cars the of the same model with half the mileage. The difference was that the owner was a bit older and used it to commute to work ~50 miles each way. He had it serviced regularly at a competent shop and did everything they recommended. I did the math and the vast majority of those miles were on a fairly open highway with a 70MPH speed limit.

He had other cars for the weekends. Pretty much only the drivers seat showed any wear, and a little bit in the back, but otherwise the interior is in pretty much new shape.

The older the car, the less relevant the exact number of years old it is, unless there's a big model change at a particular age. Our three cars are 7, 13 and 42 years old. Interestingly, the 13 and 42 year old cars have about the same number of miles on them (around 200k).

Always good to add the context Smile

No. My truck is close to 15 years old and has had far fewer problems than my wife's 8 year old truck. And we bought a used pickup a couple of years ago that had over 200K miles on it, but the mechanic says it's in excellent condition and should easily last to well over 300K miles.

I would check the reliability ratings for both as well - it is not unusual for one year to have issues that the other may not. A 2003 may have a better track record than the 2004 due to some small manufacturing change.
