Not helpful.
It wasn't that young. I have fished the very young ones out of the pool, a lot of them over the years, and they are a lot smaller.
This one was about a foot long, maybe a little longer, and he was about as big around as a normal sized finger, not a pinky, not a thumb.

Yup: rat snake. All the rat snake babies look pretty much alike, although corn snakes are more red/orange.
I know when you're flustered it might not be practical to look for details, but in North America if you can see the snake's eye and the pupil is round, it's non-venomous. Rattlers, copperheads, and cottonmouths are all vipers and have vertical pupils like a cat. Except for the coral snake, but your chances of seeing one of those guys is pretty slime. Then remember the rhyme! "Red touch yellow, kill a fellow. Red touch black, friend to Jack."
I love snakes. How come they never visit MY house??

I know about the vertical pupils, but there is no way in Hell that I am getting close enough to look them in the eye.
We had a coral snake on our patio, in Florida, when I was but a tiny baby. Cat was playing with it.
Apparently, coral snakes are very docile and you really have to work at it, to get them to bite.
And yes, I take care of things like this, but only cook once a year, at Christmas, so there, I admit it, not like you didn't know it anyway.
