Getting one early may not be the best idea. Sad thing is boosters are not recommended and at it's best it's only 50% effective.

I've had shingles and it's no picnic by a long shot. I had to have treatments by a pain specialists which included shots along the nerve route and some morphine pills orally. I don't know if I still need the shot or not. Guess I'd better check it out.

The CDC recommends it for people age 60 and up.

I don't know much about the shots but I asked my Pharmacist at Pathmark about the recent publicity and the need to get it and she said the majority of people don't need it. It's really a marketing ploy to sell shots. YMMV.

It is indicated in younger people who have had shingles. Yes, it does seem to help in those people who have already had an episode of shingles. Having shingles once does not prevent you from having it again! It is a bit pricy but seems safe. If you have never had chickenpox, I believe that you are still a candidate for the vaccine.

I got one during my annual visit to my primary care doc, along with a flu shot. I think it was covered to some extent by my insurance, but it's too soon to tell.

Who told you that, your insurance provider or the pharmacy? Just recently I read an article in the L.A. Times about pharmacies that scam customers by telling them their health insurance does not cover flu vaccinations when in fact they do:

Was the pharmacy after running my insurance card which is why I'm still on hold waiting to talk to the insurance people...
And the pharmacy people gave me a printout that showed the rejection so...we'll see
