Did anyone besides me notice that the story said "the biologist was cutting along the dorsal side (top/back) when clearly the biologist was cutting along the ventral (bottom/belly) side, as evidenced by the whale's lower jaw being visible in the video?

That explains what didn't look right when I watched! The video is rather short though. The story also plays up the bit about not expecting an explosion, when it clearly shows the marine biologist standing back as he sees material starting to bulge through the first part of his cut.
