Re: Has anyone remodeled a house that had spray foam insulation? - Filliam H. Muffman - 01-30-2014 Some companies are now making insulation foam from vegetable oils, similar to how car manufacturers have been using renewable oils for seat foam for several years. OK for a while but then there was a new mouse and I saw exactly where he came from! Not knowing what else to try I got some small wood blocks and tried to make a good physical barrier first, then more spray foam, from inside and outside. Seems to be working, for now anyway. I've heard that coarse steel wool will stop them. Re: Has anyone remodeled a house that had spray foam insulation? - OWC Jamie - 01-30-2014 davester wrote: This happened in my house as well. I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and it gets damn hot here in the summer. Insulation is just as important here as it is up north. My RV barn is insulated with closed cell foam where I've monitored the temps for a couple of years. It makes a BIG difference both in summer and winter. I'm now looking at renovating my house and I plan on putting in spray in foam. I'd like to do closed cell, but I've been told I should use open cell instead. Reason being, if there's leak in the roof I'll know it before major damage is done. Re: Has anyone remodeled a house that had spray foam insulation? - rgG - 01-30-2014 I was wondering about not being able to see any leaks part of things. Re: Has anyone remodeled a house that had spray foam insulation? - Harbourmaster - 01-30-2014 The main reason to use spray in foam is that it provides a complete thermal break. Think of this example.... on a warm day you pour ice cold tea into a plastic cup and a Styrofoam cup and leave them to sit for a few minutes. What happens? The outside of the plastic cup quickly begins to sweat and soon you have a nice puddle on your table top. The Foam cup on the other hand just sits there nicely keeping your tea cold. On a cold day you pour hot tea into the cups and what happens? The tea in the plastic cup quickly becomes cold while the tea in the Styrofoam cup stays hot for a long time. I wish the outside walls of my stucco house (built in 1954) had foam insulation. Every time the sun is shinning and it's above 70... which is a lot of the time around here... The interior walls on the South facing side of the house get hot to the touch very quickly! |
