How much of that was the display? 27"? Is the Apple TB display really a lot better than the lower-priced competition? I'm starting to think about upgrading my 20" auxiliary Dell monitor with a 27" that would better match my 27" iMac—no TB here, however.

The Apple Thunderbolt display is great because it has a built-in thunderbolt hub.

If you don't need thunderbolt, there are a lot of better options.

Even if you DO have TB, I dislike the ultraglossy finish of the Apple TB display.

If you don't need ultra-accurate color matching in your monitor, these make great alternatives:

Those are 1920 x 1080.
The TB display is 2560 x 1440

My late 2009 iMac is 2560 x 1440, too.

Not that it's essential to match it exactly; my 20" Dell is just 1600 x 1200 (cost maybe $600 when I bought it, but that was quite a while ago).

Given what NewEGG charges for the Apple TB display, that $750 looks like a good deal!
