How can a bad font crash a UNIX operating system?

Yes-- wtf happened to "protected memory?"

let me take this opportunity to cite the requisite (and ubiquitous)

must be your system, runs fine for me

although i am not currently using Mavericks.

consider this an EBS type alert for anyone who was about to post the above sentiment.

I was going insane with screen freezes. After some trial and error, it turned out to a bad USB port on my Apple keyboard.

Don't be so quick to blame the OS.

Mavericks is still a bit of your mileage may vary... 10.8.5 broke things in 'preparation' for Mavericks too - different level of issue on that one.

I have had a issue with Mail since the 2nd or 3rd update fwiw. New files I create don't sort in as 'today' unless Mail has been quit and relaunched on the current day. In fact - if I don't quit mail for a week - it shows the 'Today' files as the files created on the last day it was restarted. Scroll to the other end of the sort by date- one part says 'today' and the other part says 'No Date' for all files created on days after last restart. I have only seen it affect Apple Mail whereas other apps- like Excel and even Apple Preview have no issue on the file open function (100% consistent).

Knock on wood - haven't had other issues with 10.9.x for sometime now... but this one still annoys.

On another note - I hate when things that aren't broken get reinvented where they already were A++.

Onwards and upward.

I'm on 10.9.2 and have had absolutely zero problems. Granted, I'm on a 6 month old Macbook that's quite decked out, and I don't have a ton of crap installed.

But I can truly say that I don't think I've had any crashes at all, ever on it.

I've had some issues with Mail, but I'm not sure I'd blame Mavericks, itself, for that.

What sorts of things are expected to cause sudden cursor freezes?
Even if it is a bad peripheral--- shouldn't there be some sort of failsafe preventing it from taking the whole system down?
It's not 1995.

With apologies to 7.5.2 if previous systems were buggier...

I made that same comparison today.

No... Wait... That was 10.7.2.

10.9.2 is as buggy as 10.7.2.

...

Probably not related to your crashes, but if you're having font problems they're probably easy to deal with.

Run the Font Book app, select the library from the left panel; type command+a to select all fonts; control-click on a highlighted font and select "resolve duplicates" from the contextual menu. If no duplicates are found then control-click and select "validate fonts." In the resulting window, opt to show only fonts with errors and delete those fonts that have errors.
Read above. I followed this advice and thought I was all good, but nope.
You mentioned a previous thread, but didn't link to it.

Did the previous thread mention validating fonts?

Did the previous thread mention validating fonts? Thanks. All fonts validated and found safe to use.

After upgrading to Mavericks I could not start any Adobe apps that used to work fine with 10.6 and the old free version of Font Explorer. I got Font Explorer Pro and all was fine after trashing all the corrupted fonts.
