I got the HTC One M8 two weeks ago. It has some slightly annoying software, but it has been great as long as the reception is adequate. Just like my old LG candybar, it will drain the battery in 8 hours if it has to work to stay connected to a tower. It will last 3 days using it mostly as a phone for a couple of calls and just loading Waze to check traffic for the commutes.

I need to replace my Galaxy S2 and I have not been thrilled with it over the past 2 years. It's been replaced 3 times under warranty and it still crashes about once a day.

I need to stick with the Android platform due to apps not available on other systems.

These 2 seem to be the top choices.

I also saw the HTC One Mini which I like due to the smaller size, but the rep for AT&T says it's not worth getting an older phone. Same for the Galaxy S4 active, rep says it's a slow processor.

I use the phone for GPS tracking on a bike so the water resistance of the 4 Active would be a nice feature. Other than that, I talk, text, FB, Strava, web surf and that's about it

Cost is not really an issue, I don't really care about photos, videos, speakers (My S2 is fine for this)

Another thought-- a big factor for me is a removable battery-- I keep a charged spare in my wallet. Do all of these meet that criteria?

The Galaxy's have removable batteries. I keep a charger in my backpack but I hardly use it. ZeroLemon SlimJuice 18,600mAh Ultra-Compact Portable External Battery $49.00 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5eY1ICmn7Q or the ZeroLemon SlimJuice 6,200mAh Ultra-Compact Portable External Battery $23.99. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ah7ctVGeFY

When you connect your HTC phone to your Mac it will launch the HTC Sync Manager. You can handle files that way. Use iTunes however you use it and use Google Play Music to sync up to the cloud. Whatever you add to iTunes is automatically uploaded.

I have a double size battery in my S2 which is nice, but I also have external batteries. I once kept Strava running for over 30 hours but I don't anticipate doing that again anytime soon

I have an HTC One M7 after a HTC Sensation. My wife is still on her Sens.
Quite like them. Very nice build and comfortable feel, especially compared to the Galaxys that I've seen.

I have no phone reception issues that I'm aware of. I'm with T-Mo US.

AFT works well and easily and if it doesn't for some odd reason (depending on the OS and Mac OS as well) there are easy ways around it.

The GPS works vey well for driving, so I can't imagine it wouldn't pair nicely with a bike specific app.

I have not looked at removing the battery. With the proliferation of external battery packs, I would go that way if you are worried about life. Compare the cost of a spare Galaxy S5 battery to a similar sized battery pack. iFixit took the HTC apart, no easily swappable battery here.

I have had the Galaxy S5 for about 2 weeks now and it works great, I've got no complaints, I moved up from an S4 and don't notice a lot of difference but it does seem to be a little faster.

I got an HTC One 2 years ago. The battery would drain in less than a day. I would shut it down at night and when I tried to turn it on in the morning, it was completely dead. By the time I finally figured out it was the phone, I was stuck for two years. I have since acquired other phones and left the HTC One in the drawer. I'd opt for the Galaxy S5. I bought a Galaxy SIII mini and really like it.
