The Abrams movies are the Star Trek equivalent of cheap Mexican food. Fun while it's happening, but an hour later you wonder what the hell you just ate.

And to continue the analogy; A few days later, you find yourself at the same Taco Bell, and wondering "Why do I do this?".... and yet, you order it anyway...
Yeah, I'm passing on a run to the border when that talentless hack Orci takes over for the next one.

I have no rational explanation as to why I'll be lined up with everybody else for Star Wars VII, though...
Yup... same deal..
You find yourself in the movie seat and wondering "Why on earth did I do this? I could be home watching TV?".

I thought it was fine for what it is, but no, it doesn't have the right feel for me as a trek fan. Cumberbatch is awesome (as all the Cumberbi**hes will attest), but he doesn't quite pull off Khan. I also don't like the revision of what happens to Christopher Pike. That was one of my favorite episodes in the original. The doc, scotty, and spock are pretty dang good, although I'm absolutely sure they could have come up with a couple more idioms for McCoy's last couple lines, instead of punting (the first few were funny). I also wonder about the difference between characters vs. caracatures. kj.

I'm pretending that this movie and the previous one didn't happen. Big Grin

La - la - la - la, I'm not listening to you, la - la - la - la

Khan was a Sikh, not a pasty white Englishman, Pike is safely living out his days on Talos IV, and Kirk's current whereabouts are unknown (last seen in the Nexus), but he's not some snotty-nosed kid trying to pretend to be a Captain.

But seriously: why was this movie necessary? Why remake/rewrite what is arguably the best movie of the whole franchise? This was a bad movie, not just bad Trek (I don't really even consider this real Trek anyway).

JJ Abrams can go suck my big fat one. (Big Grin

Yeah! It was basically transformers with some caricatures of characters from star trek. That said, my 19 yr. old enjoyed it, and it wasn't hard for me to sit through, so I'd probably watch the next if it ends up on netflix too. kj.

Real question: After nearly 50 years, wouldn't one expect ST to evolve? It's not 1968 anymore, or even 1982.

There's big difference between evolution and exploitation.

The recent "Trek" movies have been pure exploitation. Nothing but money grabs trading on the brand.

:agree:

I would consider the last two films to be Trek in name only. Using the same characters and rewriting the history does not make it real Trek. In fact, the last film seemed to just use (steal?) a lot of one-liners ripped from (as I said before) what was arguably the best film in the series, and in certain ways was even insulting in its rewriting of the original story -- examples: Khan making weapons for Starfleet? And Kirk dying rather than Spock, then getting resurrected by Khan's blood after being injected into a tribble??? WTF! This whole thing stunk like a steaming pile...

I am not too offended by the crazy storylines, and I am ok with the reboot.

I think the new actors are not bad at all. And they are bringing some fresh blood into the franchise.

I DO think it was completely crazy to not use the Khan storyline to make a SuperVillain that could appear in a series of movies. I consider the writers/directors used very little creativity in the new movies.

I can think of several famous lines from my old Treks but I cannot honestly say I recall a line from these two new Treks movies.

If you are going to go through the trouble of wiping out history, destroy Vulcan, and lens flare everywhere, then rehashing Khan is a weak sauce move.

The only memorable line in either movie was McCoy saying that after his divorce, "All I have left is my bones." I really like that one. Otherwise...
