I'm not talking about band-related merchandise. I'm talking about the band performing like trained seals to promote an unrelated commercial purpose.
Yes, Pearl Jam was on a series of spots, could have been Target-- what;s left with me is that every time I hear the opening chords of "Fight to get it Back Again" I picture a TV commercial.

I saw the U2 info posted yesterday as well. Looking forward to whatever the tie in ends up being...new album, pre-loaded new album, new single, an actual album release date, whatever.
I'm a big U2 fan (despite the current trend to dislike U2) and anything they can do to help push the new album is fine by me.

U2 has quashed rumours it has struck a deal with Apple to pre-load their new album on to the iPhone 6.
A spokeswoman for the band said Bono and co have not struck a deal with Apple to release their upcoming album on its next
"They are not releasing their album on the iPhone, and they are not performing at the IPhone launch," she said.

Yeah, but that was Bono's way of coercing Apple to do something charitable, which was all but anathema to Steve Jobs. It definitely wasn't about U2 selling out to Apple.

So Bono was shilling for Blackberry, while his investment firm, Elevation Partners, was buying 40% of Palm, and this followed the U2 iPod by only a few years. Seems they managed to play, and lose from every angle on the smartphone front...then again, HP bought Palm for $1Billion and Elevation Partners bought 40% for $100Million...so actually they did pretty well on that investment.
