Precisely. Apple Pay is supposed to help Apple sell its own high-margin hardware. Not Samsung's.

iTunes on Windows wasn't about selling more PCs, but expanding the market for iPods.

If it ends up dragging everyone else along with them, then it's to the benefit of all consumers.

I recall when credit card purchases were treated like somewhat of a special thing, with careful vetting of the customer. Now, some stores don't even require a token signature for amounts under a certain threshold.

And how about signatures written with your finger on an ipad terminal. Now THERE'S security!

Apple Pay is cool but the only problem I see is it seems to be available only on Apple phones. Which means it's going to be on a large but minority of phones. Instead of killing its competition in the crib, Google, Softcard etc, can make the same deals with their vendors and quickly be on par. It's not like they're going to do nothing. They're already in the game using the same terminals I believe. Apple Pay needs to be on Android and Windows phones.

Then it's hardly Apple Pay anymore, though. It's not like Apple to license their stuff out like this. They'd rather compete in the market against Google Pay, Amazon Pay, etc. Over the course of their history, Apple has consistently wanted their tech innovations to distinguish their products from others, not enhance other manufacturers' products with licensed Apple tech.
Oh I know precisely why they do it. If your product is " all that" thenwhy worry about losing sales to Samsung? limited distribution by Apple is why Samsung is the mobile force they've become.

Android phones with NFC started shipping in 2010, but it wouldn't be the first time Apple has come from behind to dominate.

Dang, I can't see it. I have to do an account. If you have NFC, then you're in the game with Apple doing all the wooing.

Well, if this takes off the way I think it will, Apple will definitely use it as a selling point to get non-iPhone users to become iPhone users. If it looks like that's not gonna happen, though, don't think for a second that Apple won't find a way to migrate this technology to other platforms. Keep in mind that Apple will make money from every Apple Pay transaction; iPhone or no, it is in Apple's best interests financially for Apple Pay to become the new standard in electronic payment.

Google won't hesitate to populate Apple's ecosystem with their solution. I use Google Wallet (at "paypass" terminals) and with "token" details aside, is totally simple to use. Walgreens and CVS always has 'em.

Also, Apple gives the impression that buying stuff is the only use for NFC. I hope they don't limit it to just that.

Alive and kicking. FS vanished and SG came here.
