4th generation (ie, one generation behind from the current models).

News to me. That's a great price. If they hit $99, would be an easy stocking stuffer for a lot of people.

I think the current iPod touch was the first of the current design language in the Apple lineup. So in many ways, it's still current.

All they would need to do is update the cpu and camera to be refreshed.

I would expect that next year.

I see that - two years old (2012 release).

Get a good case.
And AppleCare, with a side order of SquareTrade and an Otterbox Defender made of iron surrounded by large collapsable foam cushions inside a helium balloon.

Then it'd be safe with her.

A bit misleading, the 4th gen came out in 2010, but in 2012 they introduced the White version of it. The 4th gen is limited to iOS 6.

I just lurked around Apple's support area, and I couldn't find any information about the 4th gen Touch and what iOS it can run.

On Apple's store, they're saying that iOS 7 is on the 5th gen Touch.

I wonder if the 5th gen Touch will run iOS 8. If it maxes out at iOS 7...

So, except for the camera and improved screen, it's no better than my third gen Touch that runs iOS 5.

I've got iOS 8 running on both my kids' 5th gen touches...works great.

I've still got my original iPod touch (note small "t") that I got free when I bought some Mac at that time. I also use my daughters old iPhone 3G as an iPod touch because of the camera. Original didn't have camera. The old iPhone is sloooow though, on wifi.
