That's the way we saw it. Other than the zoom creep when pointed down, it did well.

But my Canon 28-135 IS USM does it even worse.

My similar Tamron 18-270 creeps, too, but has a little zoom lock that you can flick on and off with your index finger. I've gotten in the habit of hitting it every time I pull the camera up to shoot or put it down after a shot.

No such lock on the Sigma?

the lock appears to be in the same place as the Tamron 18-270 PZD

All the superzooms exhibit this creep. In order to keep costs down, they address it with the lock at the 18mm position but not at other mm settings.

The 28-135mm, I do not have fond memories of that lens at all. Not only did it creep but the front elements were prone to tilting and causing focus to be off at strange angles.

The latest one from Tamron isn't cheap http://tinyurl.com/pdbmf2p

There are older versions that go for various prices on eBay. I believe the version before the pricey one in the link is the LD VR. It goes for various prices on eBay. Sigma has a few versions also.

Where can I find a reasonably priced lens with similar specs for my Sony e-mount camera? Those seem to be selling between $500 and $700. Ouch!

That would be the beauty of the Sony system, once they get you in, they gouge you hard.

There is an adapter that lets you put Sony A mount lenses and 3rd party A mount lenses on e mount cameras.

There are to Sony made adapters, one lets you use the existing AF system in your camera, the other one has a built in AF unit derived from the Alpha mount that is supposed to be more precise.
