That is BS. They cannot force you to pay $100 to determine their product needs to be replaced under warranty. They might be able to charge you a diagnostic fee, but that would have to be refunded if it was in fact a warranty issue.
If it was me and they tried to pull that crap I would take the water heater out, bring it into to their store, and demand a replacement for their under warranty defective product.

Don't know how it is now , but the service techs used to give out a credit that would cover the visit if you don't act like a jerk.

That is because there is only 6 years left on your warranty. the warranty applies to your original heater. You don't get another 12 years.

Right, but he REALLY didn't want to use that language. You're really not renewing the manufacturer's warranty at all. You're buying a sears plan.
