They might be able to charge you a diagnostic fee, but that would have to be refunded if it was in fact a warranty issue. If it was me and they tried to pull that crap I would take the water heater out, bring it into to their store, and demand a replacement for their under warranty defective product. " That is because there is only 6 years left on your warranty. the warranty applies to your original heater. You don't get another 12 years.
