Check the hoses that connect to the heater core. In a couple of older cars that I had, these hoses cracked and would leak. A biotch to replace working in a confined space. On my first car, the original owner cut off the water hoses from the heater core and sealed them instead of replacing them. (really stupid)
If the water was leaking onto the manifold, you would smell it.

Not onto the manifold, into it. If the crack is small, the antifreeze is vaporized and then burned off in the catalytic converter. So the smell only would show up for a short time before the cat heats up. A larger crack will exceed the capacity to burn it off, but is pretty obvious with water dripping out the tailpipe.

Came home from work, and saw a leaking hose. Like Carm says, it is in a confined space. Coming off the Thermostat area, but going over the starter (in the back of the engine) and connecting under the Carb area. I remember when I replaced the starter, I thought that the clamp for that hose would be hard to get too. Wonder if I have to take out the starter to get to it...
