Sometimes clothes don't smell very fresh after a wash, but I always took that to mean I didn't use enough soap. Never had an issue with mold smell in the washing machine. Is this a regional thing?

Does it have a rinse filter that you need to clean? Usually down by one of the front feet.

In the summer, not taking them out right away can sometimes cause a moldy smell.

At a minimum, wash your bed sheets and bath linens using chlorine bleach. Done every time, your mildew problem will go away in short order. If you want to speed up the process, run a load of towels with double the recommended amount of bleach and use hot water.
Nobody in my house uses bleach. Except me: I use bleach when I wash my clothes, bed sheets and bath linen. Everytime. I use the recommended amount. We also leave the door open. Never a problem with odors, etc. And the bleach does not wear anything out noticeably faster than it would otherwise.

Probably better than bleach, come to think of it...
Run it with a quart of white vinegar, AND bleach!

They use less water/detergent and don't shred your clothes.
We have the notorious Maytag stinker and leaving the door open alll the time it is not being used solved the problem

Try a load using less detergent than you'd normally use and see what results you get.
