The problem will be to keep the snow and ice from pulling the screen away from the frame, whatever it’s made of. An 8’ x 12’ area is a lot . Might be easier just to clean the pond out in the spring.

how about a screen made of PVC or Lumber that floats on the pond? then when ice/snow melts you just lift it and remove the leaves, the water goes thought the screen. the screen itself will never hold the ice/snow, that will be floating on the water below.

ooh... 8x12 ! Ok, we're talking aboveground pool cover territory. Basically you partially drain the pond, then put floats in the pond that will allow freeze compression , air pilllows. I always used empty and washed out milk jugs. Then cover with a tarp that is tightly attached around the pond so snow load doesn't pull it loose.

When spring comes, drain the cover with a siphon, and remove it. Pull the floats, and refill the pond all the way.

Make the perimeter out of treated lumber. String a lattice out of nylon cord. Lay 3 4X8 sheets of weatherproof sheathing on top of the nylon string.

I just want to say kudos to you for having the wife do the digging!

LOL

Re: PVC pipe strength - space-time - 09-28-2019

how deep is the hole, 6 feet or so? are you sure it is a pond and not something else? especially if she dug it.

Re: PVC pipe strength - Fritz - 09-28-2019

@ speedy - hey, you throwing shade at my wife? She and her niece worked many hours at digging that hole while I shook my head & giggled at the grill.

The last 10 years or so there was a treated wood frame with screening. But we're more concerned about shiz leaking into the pond and making the fish dumb or radioactive giants that kill us in our sleep. The snow didn't seem to be an issue as there was enough tree canopy to protect it from major dumps and pterodactyls.

There are half dozen coy or piranha in there. Hole is only about 3' at depth. It'd prolly be deeper except for the large hunk of Fordham gneiss next to it.

The pool cover idea is interesting.

@ space-time - nah, we have too many neighbors looking over the fence.

LOL, I think he's talking about you throwing dirt on your wife.

Most PVC pipe is not UV resistant. It also becomes brittle as temperatures drop.
