Our poor hands are going to be so dry by the time this gets better.

Deck,

Those distilleries might be making sanitizer but after jumping to a huge number of the sites, most don't even list it for sale to the public. Tried ordering from one of the local ones actually selling it to the public but they had a problem with my mailing/shipping address. It was entered as listed and approved by the USPS. Apparently, that doesn't work for them. Ordered some from Caseyjonesdistillery.com instead. No muss, no fuss.

Robert

Thanks for the tip, Robert. Trying an order myself later today.

I imagine most distilleries aren't inherently setup for e-commerce! A boy can dream, however.

The WHO formula includes glycerol (aka glycerin), a humectant that should help prevent skin dryness.

The WHO formula does not contain a gelling agent, like Carbopol 940 Polymer, which is inexpensive and commonly used in hand sanitizers. Some other formulas use aloe gel instead.

I must be doing something right, because I haven't even exhausted my own home supply of hand sanitizer yet, nor have I had to make it up from scratch using the aloe gel and 95% ethanol/rubbing alcohol I have. I have mixed up 70% ethanol using the 95% ethanol I borrowed from my lab, as a spray bottle, which I've used to spray things down occasionally, but even that, I've really had not that much a need for.

Yeah - the gelling agents (xanthan gum, usually) make your hands feel a bit more moisturized (like the mucopolysaccharides in aloe), but they also make them more sticky. Not something you want in the healthcare environment!

Unless you can't wash your hands, there really isn't a need for hand sanitizer. Proper hand washing for 20-30 seconds does a better job than using hand sanitizer. I bring this up as I know a few people who aren't going out at all that have tried to stock up on sanitizer because they thought they should use it in addition to hand washing.

For me, it's strictly for use when out and about...

Good point, but I have always been a germophobe and a hand washer. I would like to find a small bottle of hand sanitizer to keep in the car, because obviously, I won't be washing my hands in the car.

Only a small fraction of the stores have hand sanitizer dispensers accessible when you are leaving the store. Most don't and I really wish they did. That is why I want some for on-the-go.

Mac,

You realize some of the sanitizer made by these distilleries can be used as a sanitizer for hard surfaces as well as for your hands, right? For example, the sanitizer from Casey Jones Distillery is suitable for both tasks. It’s a nice bonus since surface sanitizers are very difficult to come by right now. Case in point, my primary source for Steramine tablets is out of stock. If I know someone needs sanitizer, I’ll direct them to Casey Jones Distillery.
