You can't go to school without what we consider basic vaccines today but ... Covid hurts adults too, and it's been politicized yada yada. This is related to America never having had a true lockdown, or they could tie lockdowns to it. Regardless, the economy and social lives remain in the tank because of the virus, and so at some point we still need to acknowledge this with something stronger than mild recommendations. People need incentives, either hard or soft ones. Mandates only work when there's a guaranteed outcome, and there isn't one here. I thought people get around this requirement by claiming religious exemption or something like that. I'm pretty sure it is not enforceable, at least if you have a good lawyer. The main difference is that people are used to it. Covid vaccines were allowed to be framed very differently and treated as such, instead of being understood there’s the common good behind it. Re: The essence of the "I refuse to get a vaccine" argument from Republicans - DeusxMac - 04-26-2021 Texas, yes, Texas! "By law in Texas (Texas Education Code, § 51.9192, Subchapter Z), all students under the age of 22 attending classes at Texas institutions of higher education must present proof of immunization for bacterial meningitis or present the appropriate exemption." (d) A student to whom this section applies or a parent or guardian of the student is not required to comply with Subsection © if the student or a parent or guardian of the student submits to the institution: (1) an affidavit or a certificate signed by a physician who is duly registered and licensed to practice medicine in the United States in which it is stated that, in the physician's opinion, the vaccination required would be injurious to the health and well-being of the student; or (2) an affidavit signed by the student stating that the student declines the vaccination for bacterial meningitis for reasons of conscience, including a religious belief, or confirmation that the student has completed the Internet-based process described by Subsection (d-3) for declining the vaccination on that basis, if applicable to the student. (d-1) The exemption provided by Subsection (d)(2) does not apply during a disaster or public health emergency, terrorist attack, hostile military or paramilitary action, or extraordinary law enforcement emergency declared by an appropriate official or other authority and in effect for the location of the institution the student attends. Pupp - 04-26-2021 Speaking of irresponsible people: My wife and I went to an open house that turned out to be way above our budget. The cars outside cost more than 50% of what we paid for our house 8 years ago. We are both fully vaccinated, but were the only ones wearing masks. The real estate agent wore a mask outside, but took it off when going inside (WTF?) This is the deep South and these people were obviously all very wealthy. The chances are that they were all Republicans. The chances are that none of them had been vaccinated. I'm sick of this. I'm sick of people at Costco taking off their masks as soon as they are in the store, then coughing up a lung - obviously ill. I'm sick of people in Walmart wearing masks on their chins, or going maskless. I'm sick of maskless people in Walmart who are in their pajamas, red and sweating, coughing like mad. I can't help but think that, since we fail to hold people accountable, we're doomed.
