Re: They aren’t astronauts - Racer X - 07-21-2021 So, loading someone into Saddam Hussein's massive cannon, and firing them up would make someone an astronaut? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Babylon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/From_the_Earth_to_the_Moon To me, taking an active part in the actual flight is crucial. Strapped in as living cargo shouldn't count. Being a payload specialist and doing repairs on the ISS, or a satellite should count for example. Your participation is active, not passive. Re: They aren’t astronauts - lost in space - 07-21-2021 Fearful of space - astronoids Re: They aren’t astronauts - SteveG - 07-21-2021 joke from 1959 Q:If athletes get athlete's foot, what do astronauts get?
A: missile toe
Re: They aren’t astronauts - Ombligo - 07-21-2021 The capsule has seating for six, I wonder if they will be putting a flight attendant aboard for safety. It seems like trusting passengers not to screw up is pretty risky. Re: They aren’t astronauts - cbelt3 - 07-21-2021 Racer X wrote: No, just a rather nasty pudding like substance …. Re: They aren’t astronauts - Racer X - 07-21-2021 Oh, Jules Verne had it all worked out. Great read. Taught me how to make gun cotton too. Re: They aren’t astronauts - Grateful11 - 07-21-2021 The elderly lady, yes she was trained and I would consider her somewhat of a astronaut, the others absolutely not. If I take a deep breath and go underwater for one minute does that make me a scuba diver, I don't think so but now maybe it should. This whole thing with Bezos and Branson is just rich people bragging rights. At least Musk is planning on going somewhere besides being weightless for 1-2 minutes. Sorry I'm in a shitty mood this morning. At least Musk is planning on going somewhere besides being weightless for 1-2 minutes. Branson will never get beyond what it is now, though it can be used for sending satellites into low earth orbit. His venture is an ego trip that will likely never be profitable. Bezos New Shepherd is not going much further than what was saw yesterday. But he is working on New Glenn which is a multistage system for heavy lifting and lunar trips similar to SpaceX's Starship. His systems also are using liquid Hydrogen and Oxygen for fuel. The thought is potentially using lunar ice for fuel and use the moon as a jumping-off point. They are also working on landers. So Blue Origins has a viable business model similar to SpaceX but is not as far advanced. Re: They aren’t astronauts - RAMd®d - 07-21-2021 I bet you're not ready for this... Space Cowboy! That cracked me up. I have a very tough time considering Branson and Bezos in the same league and earring the title of astronaut. And I reject the dictionary definition of spam in a can as being an astronaut. Passengers on a plane are not flight crew, they're just along for the ride. Being an embedded journalist doesn't make one a soldier, etc. A civilian riding in the back seat doesn't make him a Blue Angel or Thunderbird, just a guy in back, and note even a GIB. Even all the spam in the can guys, who had no flight controls, are in a different league than Bezos or Branson. I'd be more likely to award the title of Astronaut to Felix Baumgartner than anybody in the billionaire boys club. Calling either of the two Space Poseurs something that on paper puts them in the league of those space pioneers means the definition has to be reevaluated. In the meantime, Astro-nots works for me. |
