I work with a lot of engineering level companies; used to be that when someone left or was let go, they hired someone new. Nowadays, if it's a non-technical (engineering degree required) position, the Admin Assistant picks up the job. Used to have a dedicated Word Processor? Nope, now the admin. Payroll? Admin. Human Resources? Admin.

And all for no increase in salary. I have one friend who was told, bluntly, that she was lucky to be working in the current job market so she'd be smart to just take on the new work to make herself more indispensable.

Having read the article, I think that Passadumkeag should just beg another town to absorb it. The place is a train wreck.

$16/hr fior 16 hrs per week. Would have made more sense to give her the 2 week vacation and just shut down for 2 weeks. According to the article, they now want to hire 3 part time workers to do all the jobs she used to do.

And they're going to be hard pressed to find those 3 part timers who want to work for less than $16/hr, too.
So, in effect, they've more than tripled their costs.

They kind of have to spread the work to multiple people. One person doing the work is what go them into this mess. I'm sure they'll find some seniors to come in and do part time admin work, shuffle papers, etc. Life goes on in the sleepy town.

Well yeah! It is after all backwoods Maine, not much different than any other northern state with a back woods - compare it to Michigan, NY, Vt or NH and you'll find the same mind set.*
