The base firmly believes everything he says, there is no changing that. He could be caught with his dick stuck in the rear of a boar hog and they would believe that he demonstrating how to give a campaign speech. to do otherwise would be admitting they were conned, and no one ever wants to admit that.
But we don't need to worry about his base, we just need to worry about the judges he appointed.

1) He didn't have the documents, they were in possession of the FBI, who planted them there all on his floor, from the cartons that they brought in.
2) If he did have the documents, they weren't actually classified, because he declassified them all in his head.
3) If he didn't declassify them in his head, he didn't think to do it because he didn't know they were classified in the first place.
4) But if somehow he knew they were classified and he hadn't declassified them in his head, his lawyers made the mistake of saying they'd all been given back, when in fact they hadn't been.
5) If he didn't know they were classified, it's because he wasn't informed by his underlings that they were.
