RAM,

The SanDisk drives you have max at ~950Mbps because for USB, the 2018 mini has USB 3.1 Gen 2 or USB 3.2 Gen 2, both of which move at a max of 10Gb/s. The best you can do with that machine would be an Envoy Express which maxes at 1500Mbps.

For Prof, it's the same situation. The reason I'd go with the DYI SSD is because he can easily move the wicked fast stick into a faster box at a later time. Stick with a Thunderbolt 3 box for now. If he moves to a machine that supports a faster protocol, it'll be easy to move the stick to a newer box that supports it.
