But all these "academics" do is teach shrimp to run on treadmills! I don't want my taxes paying for that!

We have pursued federal grants here a few times. They have been related to outreach, not research. But they are notoriously difficult and we don't pursue often. Competitive, high standards for outcomes, lots of details requested. So much work up front, and if you don't get the grant, that work is lost if you can't retool for a different funder. Because the process is so demanding, we only pursue when we have the best possible proposal to bring.
They do not just pass out checks.

Just noting that the issue I'm posting about is separate from the IDCR kerfuffle.

No grants - 15% or normal IDCR - are getting awarded.
