I've never bought a car for myself.

Inherited an '83 Volvo 245 around 1988, which sailed beyond the sunset at 35 years old. Replaced by my sneakers.

Bought a few cars with the family, first was a used '90 Volvo 760 Turbo in '98 for about $9K but never one for myself.

1961 Plymouth Lancer in 1971

Push button automatic 3 speed transmission.

AM radio.

Heater worked.

No A/C.

Black with rust all over.

It came with 6 snow tires-4 mounted on steel wheels and two tires on rims in the trunk.

The car looked the same whether looking at it from the front or the rear.

It cost me $100/cash.

Thumbs up.

Rob

68 Firebird convertible.

350 small block, but at some point had obtained the dual-scoop hood for the 400.

Sold it in Hawaii before I got out of the Navy.

First car was in high school when I turned 16 or 17. 64 Impala Coupe 283 3 speed. Put mags on it and added an 8 track. Think it was 1200 bucks or so--this was in 1968. Funny, the sales man showed me a 59 vette for even less but I told him I probably could not get insurance on it. It was in good shape too. In 1971 or so I got a used Chevelle SS 396 four speed. Rear air shocks, glass packs positive traction. Had two friends--one with a 69 Road Runner, the other with a 70 Super Bee. Ahh the age of the muscle cars when gas was 29 cents per gallon.

Both the Impala and Chevelle are worth way more that what I paid for in today's market. If I knew then what I know now.........

1971 Mercury Capri bought in 1976 for $1750. I had one problem with the car; I don't remember exactly what it was but a gas station mechanic out in the middle of nowhere drove 30 miles to get a part and fixed it that day. I was pretty happy to pay that bill.

When I got my college job in 1981 I bought a different used car and gave the Capri to a church to give to somebody who needed it. A couple of years later I saw it on our campus parked in the student area near a technical program classroom building. It was there regularly for a couple of years and then it disappeared. I hope the student graduated and took the car to her/his new job!

My first was a light blue '67 Chevy Bel Air, bought in '83 or '84. I'm not sure how much I paid, but $300 comes to mind. Three large-ish people could fit comfortably in the front bench seat. Also, with the hood open, a person could stand between the engine and the cowl.

My second car was a '77 or '78 Toyota Corona (yes, Corona not Corolla) a couple years later. Again, I don't remember how much I paid and I don't think I could even guess. I'm also not positive on the year; it might have been a '74.

I didn't know they had a "Lancer" back then. For a number of years, my dad owned a '63 Dodge Dart, also with the 3-speed push button automatic.

I paid about $1200 for an Audi Fox. Way too much, but a fun ride… FWD and a four speed ! Rebuilt that damn Solex carb twice. Once in my grandparents barn. Later paid $1100 for a 72 Chrysler . And a few years later paid $500 for a 68 Chevy staton wagon.

Re: Used Car Prices - Wags - 04-21-2025

In 1966 I bought a 55 Volkswagen bug from the neighbor up the street for $300. Had the small back window, the one piece. He purchased it in Germany so it had the type of turn signals that were little pneumatic arms that popped out the side of the door frame and lit up. Pretty cool but not legal in the US. It also had a reserve tank, like a motorcycle and a gigantic radio that only got AM. I was 16, kept it less than a year. Had my first real make out session in the back seat. Not optimal. Sold it for $200 and bought a 56 Ford two door station wagon from a friend for $400. Something much better happened at the drive-in in that one …
