I picked up one of these external HDs from OWC a while ago:

Works great for my needs. I basically just plug it in. Back up everything. Unplug it. And it goes back into it's cardboard box. And in the desk drawer.

OWC has great customer service. I know i could get a bigger drive if i bought the components separately, but i'm seriously NOT technically inclined. I just wanted something pre-assembled and ready to go out of the cardboard box.

FWIW that drive has an SATA interface, which is much more difficult to find a case for

Link to a cheap enclosure that works fine. It can also be positioned on its side. Good ventilation; very easy drive installation.

I had no idea memory was so freakin cheap.

That would be storage, not memory. Memory is RAM, the sticks of chips that are measured in 512MB, 1G, 2G (G as in GB) etc.

Storage usually refers to hard drives (external and internal) and also flash memory such as Compact Flash, USB flash drives, and SD and xD cards.

In the above instances, storage refers to hard drives, storing much more information such as 40, 80, 250, and 500GB, to name a few.

I'd consider HDs to be a temporary storage solution, as all HDs will fail. I think DVDs (and especially DVD-RAM) would be a better solution for archiving.

Re: External Hard Drive recs? - dotman - 04-10-2007

is this still a good deal? I need a large external capture drive to go with my "now shipping" mac book pro.

You could build a 750G external cheaper with some shopping, waiting for a sale on a bare 750G HD.

There are currently much cheaper/GB drives around, but they're smaller in capacity. A few weeks ago, Fry's had the 400G version for $139.

To me, $280 is not a bad price for a FW/USB combo with a 16MB cache. And it's also got some kind of backup function. But you are paying a little premium for a lot of storage in one HD.

It's not *that* long a go where a bare 500G HD was going for the same price. So in a couple of months that price could plummet. Or not. Once the Costco price it gone, it *could* be a while before Fry's or somebody comes close.

That's a lot of storage in a very small footprint.

I'm certainly tempted.

And impatient.
